LEROY TWP. — A 62-year-old Fowlerville woman was killed Saturday morning when she was struck by a vehicle on Elm Road, the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office said.
The woman, who was not identified, died while being transported to an area hospital for treatment, the sheriff’s office said in a Saturday night press release.
“Northern Ingham Emergency Services Authorities and one of our deputies initiated CPR and other life saving measures at the scene,” the sheriff’s office said. “Unfortunately, her injuries were too severe and she was pronounced deceased in the ambulance.”
Police said the woman was driving north on Elm Road about 11:40 a.m., between Holt and Van Orden roads, when she had to abruptly stop to avoid a deer in the road.
The woman then got out of her van while in the road to re-secure her cargo, which had shifted.
While she was outside the vehicle, a 44-year-old Webberville woman who also was northbound, drove around the stopped vehicle and struck the Fowlerville woman.
“Investigators learned that both the pedestrian and on coming vehicle may have taken evasive maneuvers to avoid colliding,” the sheriff’s office said.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the woman and a child traveling with her were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the sheriff’s office said.
The victim also had one adult passenger. Police did not say whether they suffered any injuries.
Names of those involved were not released to allow additional family notifications, police said.
The Ingham Regional Crash Investigation Team was activated and the Michigan State Police also assisted with resources on scene and at the hospital.
