A wrong-way driver on a Los Angeles highway died after being hit by a passing vehicle and a bus following a collision, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The man was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 110 when his Honda hit a cargo van just before 5 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, a CHP news release said.

The wrong-way driver exited his Honda and was hit by a passing vehicle, officers said.

Moments later, the man was hit by a bus while laying in traffic lanes, killing him, officers said.

Los Angeles Metro Bus officials told KABC the bus was out of service at the time of the accident. The crash closed the highway for about three hours.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The CHP asks anyone with information to call 213-744-2331 or 323-259-3200.
