Boy, 11, dead in Smith County crash after hit by tractor-trailer

SMITH COUNTY, Tenn. (WZTV) — A boy is dead after he was ejected from a vehicle onto the roadway in Smith County on Thursday.

A preliminary report from Tennessee Highway Patrol says a vehicle was driving West on I-40 in Smith County when it ran off the right side of the road into a ditch.

The car then hit an embankment, overturned and came to a rest, the report adds. Two juvenile boys, 10 and 11, were ejected from the van during the rollover and thrown onto the road.

The 11-year-old boy was then it by a tractor-trailer, THP confirms. Neither boys were wearing seat belts.

Two other individuals in the vehicle, a 36 and 37-year-old from North Carolina, are injured. Charges are pending for the 36-year-old driver of the SUV.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured and no charges are pending.
