A 30-year-old man standing outside his car on the shoulder of the New Jersey Turnpike after he hit a disabled vehicle involved in an earlier crash was struck and killed by another southbound vehicle early Monday.
Alton Smith, of Levittown, Pennsylvania, was pronounced dead following the last of the three crashes along the inner roadway of the Turnpike near milepost 64.8 in Robbinsville, State Police said.
The two cars involved in the first crash were disabled in the left lane when Smith struck one of the vehicles, which was unoccupied, officials said.
Smith then parked on the right shoulder and got out of his car. A short time later, a southbound car slammed into one of the unoccupied vehicles from the first crash and then hit Smith at about 2:15 a.m, officials said,
The driver of the car that his Smith suffered minor injuries. No one in the other two vehicles was hurt. The crash remains under investigation.
