WARREN COUNTY, NJ — New Jersey State Police said two people are dead, including a 12-year-old girl, after a passenger vehicle crashed into a parked semi truck late Wednesday night along I-78 in Warren County.
The crash, which happened near mile marker 6.2 in Greenwich Township, also injured a six-year-old boy and a nine-month-old girl in the back seat, as well as a 37-year-old woman who was in the front seat.
State Police Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron said the driver of a Lincoln vehicle was eastbound on I-78 when the crash occurred, at around 11:23 p.m. The vehicle reportedly went onto the right shoulder of the highway and crashed into the back of a parked International tractor-trailer.
The driver and a 12-year-old girl, who was in a rear seat, sustained fatal injuries from the crash. Police are not releasing their names until their next-of-kin are notified.
Lebron said the woman, who is from the Bronx, sustained serious injuries and first responders airlifted her to a nearby hospital. The two surviving children had moderate injuries and were also transported to an area hospital by helicopter.
State police did not mention any injuries to the semi truck operator.
Officials are still investigating the crash, and said no further information is available as of Thursday afternoon.
