VERONA, Ky. (WXIX) - Southbound Interstate 71 is back open following an hours-long closure in Northern Kentucky as crews cleaned up a fiery crash and spill involving two semis.
Three vehicles in all were involved in the crash that brought traffic to a standstill near the Verona exit starting at 5:30 a.m.
“One semi struck hit another semi that was parked on the right shoulder of the interstate,” said Major Philip Ridgell with the Boone County Sheriff’s Office.
“The semi that struck the other on the shoulder caught fire and was fully engulfed. That driver was transported to UC (hospital) after sustaining burns to his arm. There was a third vehicle involved that was repaired at the scene and remained in service.”
The semi that was rear-ended has heavy damage to its trailer and its cargo spilled onto the highway, according to Boone County dispatchers.
