2 dead after rear-ending semi on Highway 49

BEULAH, ND (KXNET) — Two 20-year-olds were killed when their vehicle rear-ended a semi-truck on Highway 49, 11 miles south of Beulah.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, Highway 49 northbound traffic was stopped by the fire department for a vehicle fire that was blocking the roadway. A Volvo Semi truck, driven by a Minot man, was stopped in the northbound lane with more vehicles in front of him.

The Highway Patrol says two 20-year-old men from Ely, Nevada, and Riverton, Utah, respectively, were traveling north in a Volkswagen Tiguan and did not see the stopped semi in the roadway when the Volkswagen Tiguan struck the Volvo’s trailer in the rear end.

Both men were pronounced deceased on scene; the Minot man was not injured. The crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
