Man survives crash, hit by tractor-trailers in chain reaction accident in Shenandoah Co.

SHENANDOAH CO., Va. (7News) — A D.C. man is fighting for his life after walking away from a single-vehicle crash, only to be struck by a tractor-trailer moments later early Sunday morning, according to Virginia State Police (VSP).

The 45-year-old was driving a 2014 Honda CRV along Interstate 81 when it crashed near the 292-mile marker at around 3 a.m. Officials said the vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway and the driver overcorrected before colliding with a guardrail on the right shoulder.

The man was able to leave the car after it stopped on the right shoulder and walked into the northbound lanes, where he was struck by a 2015 Kenworth tractor-trailer unable to avoid the incident, according to officials.

A second 2015 Kenworth tractor-trailer then hit the first tractor-trailer after that driver also tried to avoid a collision.

None of the tractor-trailer drivers were injured, but the D.C. man was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital for life-threatening injuries. An investigation is ongoing.
