One dead following hit-and-run crash on I-69 in northeast Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - The Allen County Sheriff’s Department (ACSD) shares that a hit-and-run crash on northbound I-69 at Union Chapel Road left one person dead early Thursday morning.

Around 3:20 a.m. Thursday, a public safety alert was sent out in reference to the crash investigation.

Police confirmed that they were dispatched to northbound I-69 near the 319-mile marker around 2:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a body in the roadway.

Upon arrival at the scene, police say they found a disabled semi pulled over on the side of the highway and one person, who was pronounced dead at the scene, on the highway.

According to the ACSD, officers found vehicle parts from another semi that they believed to have been involved in the crash. Police say they are searching for a red or maroon Volvo semi-tractor, with front passenger side damage and a missing mirror.

Police are asking anyone with information about this semi to contact the department at 260-449-3000.
