Teen Killed, James McGlothlin Injured in Truck Accident on U.S. 287 in Clay County, TX

Clay County, TX — May 31, 2024, a teenager was killed and James McGlothlin was injured in a truck accident just before 12:00 noon along U.S. Highway 287.

According to authorities, 49-year-old James McGlothlin and a 15-year-old girl were traveling in a southeast bound Chevrolet Malibu on U.S. Highway 287 in the vicinity northwest of Belknap Creek Road when the accident took place.

An 18-wheeler was reportedly parked on the right shoulder of the highway. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the Malibu veered toward the right, drifting out of the active lane of the highway and onto the shoulder. There, it was involved in a collision between it’s front-right and the 18-wheeler’s trailer’s back left. The passenger vehicle then ricocheted back into the active lanes of the highway were its back end was involved in a secondary collision with the back-right side of the trailer of a second 18-wheeler.

The teenaged girl suffered fatal injuries as a result of the wreck, according to reports, and was declared deceased at the scene. McGlothlin incurred reportedly severe injuries, as well; he was transported to a local medical facility by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment. No other injuries have been reported. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
