BERKELEY, CA (August 5, 2024) — Charles Nelson was hit and killed by a semi-truck on the 80 Freeway near University Avenue.
Berkeley Police and firefighters responded to reports of an accident around 3:40 a.m. Thursday. Upon responding, authorities learned that a semi-truck driver believed he had struck a pedestrian on the westbound Interstate 80.
Traffic investigators later identified the pedestrian as Nelson, who had pulled over possibly to flag down help. California Highway Patrol officers closed the freeway, including access from University Avenue, to investigate.
Soon after, a coroner responded to the scene to assist with the body. Authorities did not say what led to the accident or why Nelson pulled over. However, an investigation should confirm the details.
