A man standing next to a disabled vehicle was struck and killed on Columbus’ East Side Monday night, and a driver involved in the crash fled the scene, police said.
At about 10:30 p.m., a 2004 Chevrolet Impala broke down on southbound Seltzer Road south of the East 5th Avenue intersection, police said. David Ford, 43, a passenger, exited the vehicle and stood near its driver’s side door.
About five minutes later, a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado southbound on Stelzer Road struck the Impala from behind, police said. The Impala struck Ford, and the impact pushed the car about 100 feet down Stelzer Road, according to a news release.
Ford was transported to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in critical condition. He was pronounced dead at 11:09 p.m., police said.
Police located the driver of the Silverado, who they have not publicly identified, about a mile’s drive away at 3223 Allegheny Ave. The Columbus police accident investigation unit is investigating the crash.
