Driver dies after vehicle crashes into empty truck on Route 24 in Berkley

A driver died after hitting a truck on Route 24 in Berkley Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

A little before 1 p.m., a vehicle hit an empty truck in the breakdown lane of the freeway, the Massachusetts State Police Department said. The truck belonged to a nearby work crew. The crash happened on the south side of Route 24 in Berkley, near mile marker 13.8.

The driver died as a result of the crash, the state police said.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation closed all travel lanes during an investigation of the crash, the state police said.

Another crash involving two vehicles happened before the fatal crash on Route 24, the state police said. Both drivers were taken to nearby hospitals for non-life-threatening injuries.

As of 3:04 p.m., the left lane of Route 24 was open for travel around the first crash, the state police said. This crash is under investigation.
