DONIPHAN, Neb. (KSNB) - Slick roads were a factor in a chain reaction crash Thursday night on Highway 281 just north of Doniphan.
The Hall County Sheriff’s office said the accident happened just before 7 p.m. at the Clarice Street intersection. The sheriff said a driver was pulling out of the Dollar General parking lot and struck a south-bound semi.
The semi jack-knifed and blocked both north and south bound lanes of the highway. This started the chain reaction crash involving four other vehicles.
Both north and south-bound lanes of Highway 281 were closed for a time between the Doniphan stoplight and Cedar View Road one mile north.
Five ambulances from Grand Island and Doniphan were called to the scene to take the injured to local hospitals.
The sheriff said 47-year-old Rigoberto Palma-Peres received life threatening injuries in the crash. Local4 is checking on his condition.
Five others were hurt, including Kodi Bucy, 50, of Glenvil; Kimberly Funk, 47, of Hastings; Amber Snyder, 28, of North Platte; Jesse Flanagan, 36, of Hastings; and a juvenile female.
The sheriff’s office said weather conditions were a factor in the crash.
In its press release Friday morning, the sheriff’s office did not provide names of the people involved or whether there were any citations or arrests. The sheriff’s office is still investigating.
In a related accident, a Hall County deputy was providing traffic control nearby. That deputy’s cruiser was struck by an oncoming vehicle and caused major damage. The deputy was unhurt. The state patrol is investigating that crash.
