Canajoharie, N.Y. — A pedestrian was killed by a passing car Friday morning on the New York State Thruway.
David Bonaparte, of Rome, was driving west on Interstate 90 around 11:50 a.m. Friday when he pulled over and onto the northern shoulder of the highway in Canajoharie, the New York State Police said in a news release. Canajoharie is a small village in the Capital Region between Utica and Albany.
After stepping out of his car, Bonaparte was hit by a westbound vehicle, troopers said.
Bonaparte suffered “severe injuries” and died at the scene, troopers said. He was 61 years old.
The name of the driver of the vehicle that struck Bonaparte was not immediately released. State police said the driver “immediately” stopped after the accident and called for help.
The investigation into the deadly crash remains open, troopers said.
