Man killed by SUV after getting out of his car following N.J. Turnpike crash, cops say

A 39-year-old man who was exiting his vehicle after an earlier crash was struck and killed by a passing SUV on the New Jersey Turnpike in Mercer County Wednesday night, authorities said.

Moise Delva, of Westbury, New York, was hit about three-quarters of a mile south of Exit 7A in Hamilton at about 10 p.m., State Police said.

Delva had been driving a Toyota Camry south on the inner roadway when he lost control of his car and struck the center barrier, police said. His car then slid back onto the toll road and collided with a Kia Sorento before again hitting the median and stopping on the left shoulder.

The Kia also veered into the center median before coming to a rest partially in the left shoulder and left lane, authorities said. The Kia driver got out of the vehicle before it was hit by a Ford Fusion, pushing the Kia across the southbound lanes and onto the right shoulder.

Delva then got out of his car and a Honda Pilot hit him and an 18-year-old EMT from Lakewood who stopped to assist following the first crash, police said.

Delva was pronounced dead at the scene while the driver of the Ford and the EMT suffered minor injuries, police said.

The crashes, which took place near milepost 59.2, remain under investigation.
