Pedestrian dead after being hit by car near Spokane Valley

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — A man died after being hit by a car near the Spokane Valley on North Tschirley Road north of East Dalton Avenue on Sunday evening.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) says sheriff’s office deputies responded to the scene around 5:30 p.m. along with officers from the Spokane Valley Police Department and crews from the Spokane Valley Fire Department.

SCSO says initial information indicates that the car was traveling north on Tschirley Road and was avoiding a separate car that was stopped on the east side of the roadway and protruding into the northbound lane.

The driver, who stayed on scene after the crash and cooperated with law enforcement, says he noticed something in front of his car and swerved to avoid crashing into it but was unsuccessful.

SCSO says the man called 911 and began CPR with instruction from Spokane Regional Emergency Communications until medical personnel arrived. Medics from SVFD later pronounced the man dead on the scene.

SCSO investigators later learned that the man who was hit had made a delivery on the west side of Tschirley and was crossing the road to return to his car, the car stopped on the east side of the road, when he was hit.

SCSO says impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash and the driver was later released without charges.

SCSO says the investigation remains active and the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the name of the man who died at a later time.
