Person dead after being hit by SUV in Orange County while changing flat tire on I-40: NCSHP

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A person is dead after being hit by a passing vehicle while changing a flat tire early Tuesday morning in Orange County.

According to North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers, around 4:38 a.m. they responded to a report of a crash that occurred on Interstate 40 near NC Highway 86. Investigators discovered that a vehicle was disabled and partially parked in the eastbound lane of I-40 near NC-86.

The driver of the disabled vehicle was attempting to change a flat tire on the left side of the car when an SUV traveling east struck the driver in the roadway.

The driver of the disabled vehicle died on the scene, according to troopers.

The driver of the SUV was uninjured and remained on scene until authorities arrived.

NCSHP troopers said this collision is still under investigation.

I-40 East near NC-86 was closed for about two hours during the investigation. The scene was cleared at 7:10 a.m.
