A woman who was killed when her disabled van was struck by another vehicle on Interstate 5 in Carlsbad earlier this month has been identified as Luz Maria Sandoval, 63.
The Carlsbad resident was southbound on I-5 just north of Poinsettia Lane when her Dodge van became disabled about 10:50 p.m. on Jan. 9, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office.
Her son got out of the van and was pushing it on the freeway, then jumped out of the way just before it was rear-ended by a Ford SUV.
Law enforcement and paramedics arrived to extricate her from the van and attempted lifesaving procedures. Sandoval died at the scene.
