Covington officer injured after cruiser hit while assisting disabled vehicle on I-71/75

COVINGTON, Ky. — A Covington police officer was taken to the hospital after he was hit while assisting another driver on I-71/75 Thursday night.

It happened around 10:52 p.m. when a Covington officer responded to the highway for a disabled vehicle.

Covington police say the officer was in his cruiser with his emergency lights on, blocking the right lane for the disabled vehicle when another car rear-ended the cruiser, pushing it nearly 150 feet.

The officer was taken to St. Elizabeth Covington where he was treated and released.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the cruiser was taken to UC Medical Center with a broken leg. She is in stable condition.

Police said while no charges have been filed at this time, the incident remains under investigation to determine whether alcohol, drugs or speed played a role.

“We want to remind all motorists that Kentucky law requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching emergency vehicles on the interstate. Doing so protects first responders, other motorists, and yourself. Please drive safely,” Covington police said in a release.
