MIAMI COUNTY, OH (October 21, 2025) — A semi-truck driver is believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel early Tuesday morning, leading to a multi-vehicle crash on northbound Interstate 75 near State Route 571, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Accident Details: Emergency responders were dispatched at approximately 5:39 a.m. to the I-75 northbound on-ramp after receiving reports of a crash involving a semi-truck and multiple vehicles.
Officials said the semi driver was traveling north when he allegedly fell asleep while driving. The truck first collided with a disabled vehicle that was stopped under the overpass. Rather than stopping after the first impact, the semi continued moving toward the ramp.
Upon reaching the northbound on-ramp, the driver swerved and struck a second semi-truck that was parked on the shoulder of the ramp. Local news crews arriving at the scene reported seeing the involved semi blocking the entrance to the freeway.
The condition of the drivers involved has not been confirmed, and authorities have not said whether any injuries were reported.
Investigation: The Ohio State Highway Patrol is leading the investigation. Troopers on the scene stated that driver fatigue appears to be the main factor in the crash. Investigators are expected to review the driver’s logbooks, hours-of-service compliance, and vehicle data to determine whether federal rest regulations were followed.
Authorities will also assess whether other elements, such as poor visibility, traffic flow, or mechanical issues, contributed to the collisions. No citations or arrests have been reported at this time. Officials have not released the names of the drivers involved.
Legal Considerations: Crashes involving drowsy commercial drivers often lead to complex legal and financial consequences. If a semi-truck driver falls asleep and causes a crash, liability may extend to both the driver and the trucking company, particularly if rest periods were skipped or service-hour rules were ignored.
Occupants of vehicles struck in such crashes may be eligible to file claims for medical bills, lost income, vehicle damage, and emotional distress.
When commercial vehicles collide with disabled or parked vehicles, investigators also examine whether adequate warning devices like hazard lights or reflective triangles were used. These details can influence fault determination and insurance claims.
