Simsbury man found trapped in his car 12 hours after crash dies days later, police say

SIMSBURY - Police on Friday identified the person fatally injured in a car crash Monday - who was trapped in the vehicle for more than 12 hours before being discovered - as Colin Stephenson of Simsbury.

Stephenson, 44, was found Tuesday at about 10:15 a.m. in woods off Bushy Hill Road near Overlook Terrace after being reported missing the night before, Deputy Police Chief Chris Davis said. Police believe he was trapped in the car starting at about 9:45 p.m. Monday, Davis said.

The car was not visible from the roadway, police said. Officers began investigating around 8 a.m. and used GPS and cameras to locate the victim in the general area, police said. Freed from the wreckage, he was taken to a hospital, police said.

Police said Friday afternoon that Stephenson died at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford due to his injuries.

Stephenson’s Facebook page said he is originally from West Hartford and graduated from Conard High School. He studied at the University of Vermont, according to his profile.

A Facebook post from the Stephenson family says, “I’m devastated to report that Colin Stephenson passed away on Wednesday, October 1st from injuries sustained in a car accident. Colin was a beloved father, husband, son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He was a bright soul that brought joy to countless people’s lives. We are deeply saddened by his loss. We will post more information when available.”

On his LinkedIn page, Stephenson wrote that he has worked in the financial technology, business services and banking industry all of his professional life, “working everywhere from the phones to back-end operations to leading strategic vision and product innovation at scale.”

“I believe I’ve excelled because of my passion for bridging gaps,” he wrote.

The page lists his current occupation as consulting business owner for Bluewater Products and Strategies.
