State Police squad car struck in ‘Scott’s Law’ accident on I-57 in Arcola

ARCOLA, Ill. (WCIA) — An Illinois State Police squad car was struck on I-57 in Arcola as a trooper was directing traffic for another crash Thursday morning.

At around 5:50 a.m., a State Police trooper was parked across the northbound lanes of I-57 conducting traffic control for a different crash that involved a commercial motor vehicle, according to a news release from ISP. The trooper had turned on the squad car’s emergency lights and was directing traffic to exit at milepost 203 onto IL 133.

The driver of a Chevrolet Trailblazer failed to move over and exit, and it struck the front passenger side of the trooper’s squad car. The trooper was outside of the squad car at the time of the crash, but no one was hurt.

The driver of the Chevy was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and a Scott’s Law/Move Over Law violation.

At 6:25 a.m., State Police said this crash was temporarily diverting traffic at exit 203. At 9:27 a.m., they sent out an update that traffic was no longer being diverted, but travel was being reduced to one lane at the crash site near mile post 210. Drivers were asked to use caution in the area as clean-up efforts continued.

In their news release, State Police said that in 2025, there have now been 12 Move Over Law-related crashes throughout Illinois. One of those took place in Urbana in August when two state troopers were hurt in an overnight crash in which a driver ran a red light and hit their squad car.
