Craven County, NC (November 7, 2025) – A tragic highway crash claimed the life of a New Bern woman and left another driver seriously injured on Tuesday at the convergence of US 70 West and US 17 South in Craven County. The collision occurred when a disabled vehicle was struck while stopped in an active traffic lane.
According to local authorities, the incident happened on November 5 when a burgundy Honda Civic, driven by 54-year-old Vicki Michelle Wallace, became disabled due to a flat tire. Rather than pulling onto the shoulder, the vehicle remained in the far-right lane of the highway. Wallace exited the vehicle and stood near the rear bumper when a white Toyota Tacoma, traveling westbound, collided with her and then struck the stopped Honda.
Wallace was fatally injured and pronounced dead at the scene. The impact forced her between the two vehicles, resulting in catastrophic trauma. The driver of the Tacoma suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Carolina East Medical Center for treatment. Authorities confirmed there were no passengers in either vehicle, and no charges are expected to be filed in connection with the incident.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. No further information has been released at this time.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Vicki Michelle Wallace. We also send our thoughts to the injured driver and wish them a full recovery.
