Stranded driver dies after being struck by car on I-270

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — A stranded driver was struck and killed on Interstate 270 after getting out of their vehicle Thursday morning.

The Missouri Department of Transportation said the incident happened on eastbound I-270 near West Florissant Avenue at about 5:40 a.m. Three lanes of the highway were closed as of 6:15 while crews responded to the crash.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said a car was stranded on the shoulder of the highway. The driver of that car got out and was standing by the door when they were struck.

The driver was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. They died a short time later.

The car that struck them remained on the scene.

Lane closures are expected to last until about 9 a.m., according to MoDOT.
