One person was killed and another injured in a crash on the Florida’s Turnpike in Broward County Friday morning, according to Florida Highway Patrol officials.
The crash happened at around 6:49 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the Turnpike at Mile Marker 55, where it meets Interstate 595.
According to FHP, the crash involved a 2021 Mercedes Benz SUV and a 2015 Freightliner pulling two trailers. Video shows the latter vehicle with the FedEx logo.
Authorities said the SUV was stopped in the center lane when the FedEx truck was “unable to avoid” it and hit its rear. The impact sent the SUV southeast and it collided with a concrete median wall.
Authorities initially said the driver of the FedEx, a 57-year-old Naples man, was killed but later said that he was just injured in the crash.
A 36-year-old woman from Miami who was a passenger in the SUV was killed, while the man driving the SUV suffered serious bodily injuries and was rushed to to the hospital.
Video of the scene showed the crumpled white vehicle, with its back half heavily impacted. Up ahead, the FedEx truck appeared to have part of the vehicle stuck to its front end.
Traffic cameras also showed major congestion as drivers attempted to merge onto the one open lane.
The investigation is ongoing.
