Ambulance headed to crash on I-95 in Volusia struck from behind; 3 injured

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – A Volusia County EMS ambulance headed to a crash on I-95 was struck from behind, sending it off the highway and into a guardrail, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The two wrecks happened Tuesday morning on I-95 north at mile marker 268 near Ormond Beach.

The FHP said the ambulance was called to a two-vehicle crash on I-95 and was traveling north on the interstate in the inside lane with emergency lights and sirens activated.

A Ram 1500 pickup truck was also traveling north on I-95 in the inside lane, behind the ambulance.

Troopers said the ambulance was slowing down as they were arriving on-scene of the previous crash when the pickup truck “failed to slow sufficiently” and struck the right rear of the ambulance, causing both vehicles to run off of the road and strike the guardrail.

Three crash victims from the two collisions were taken to Daytona Halifax Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, but the two EMS paramedics were not hurt and remained at the scene, according to the FHP.

The inside lane of I-95 north was blocked in the area but later reopened.

The crashes are under investigation.
