FRESNO CO, Calif. (FOX26) — A 7-year-old boy was found wandering on the side of the road after being by his mother’s side for nearly 12 hours following a fatal crash.
CHP says officers first received a call around 8:40 a.m. on Sunday for reports of a person who never came home as expected.
A BOL (“Be On the Lookout”) was issued for Bailie French, 30, of Squaw Valley.
Around 11:45 a.m., officers responded to a 7-year-old found on the right shoulder of Highway 168, just east of Qualls Prather Road, in Auberry.
CHP officers responded with deputies from the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office and found that the Subaru had gone off the roadway and overturned several times down an embankment.
French was found outside of the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities are unsure if the woman was ejected or if she left the car after the crash.
Investigations show that neither French nor the child was wearing seatbelts during the crash and that the child spent nearly 12 hours next to his mother’s body before walking down the road to find help.
The child was taken to the hospital with moderate to major injuries.
