WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. — Two people were struck on eastbound Interstate 70 near Ward Road after they got out of their vehicle, which had broken down.
The crash happened around 3 a.m. on Saturday and resulted in the lanes being closed for several hours. In an update late Tuesday, Wheat Ridge Police said that investigators determined a vehicle had broken down in the lane of traffic that becomes the Ward Road off-ramp.
Two people who were in that vehicle got out, police said. While they were standing outside, another vehicle struck their disabled vehicle, which then hit them.
One of them had minor injuries, according to police. The other had serious injuries and is still recovering, but is expected to be OK, police said.
Police used the crash to remind drivers to pull over to the side of the road or the breakdown lane if possible. Drivers are also urged to turn on their hazard lights, if possible, to make sure they’re visible to oncoming traffic. They should also call 911 to get help from responders.
While the investigation is ongoing, police are not considering felony charges against the driver.
