COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — Florida Highway Patrol reported two traffic-related deaths in Columbia County on Sunday. There have been six deaths across five crashes in Flagler, Clay and Columbia counties Sunday morning.
At approximately 5:20 a.m., an SUV was disabled in the westbound lane of State Road 100 near County Road 245A, the crash report said. The previous driver of the SUV, a 31-year-old Lake City man, was standing outside the vehicle.
The front of the SUV struck the Lake City man immediately before striking the rear and left side of a sedan driven by a 56-year-old Hawthorne man, which was heading west on State Road 100. The age and city of the SUV’s driver were not released by FHP.
The SUV came to rest on its left side on the north shoulder of State Road 100. The sedan was facing southeast in the eastbound travel lane of State Road 100, the report said.
The driver of the sedan received minor injuries from the crash, troopers said.
The second crash involved a sedan hitting an immobile tractor-trailer.
At 6:55 a.m., a sedan was heading south on Interstate-75 near mile marker 437 where FHP said a tractor-trailer was stopped on the right emergency shoulder with mechanical problems.
The agency said the sedan attempted to pass other traffic by driving onto the emergency shoulder, later striking the trailer.
The sedan’s driver, a 26-year-old Port Saint Lucie man, was pronounced dead at the scene.
