A Florida woman died last week on the way home from her birthday dinner after she was hit by an SUV while trying to help a dog on the side of the road, authorities reportedly said.
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported that the 25-year-old Tampa resident was killed around 10:30 p.m. local time on Thursday, March 13, after she got out of her vehicle to help a dog she spotted along the side of the road, per NBC affiliate WFLA, Fox affiliate KSTU and The Tampa Bay Times.
The incident occurred on Dale Mabry Highway. According to the news outlets, troopers said that as the woman walked up to the dog, a 69-year-old man driving a Toyota RAV4 hit both the woman and dog, killing them both.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The identities of the woman killed in the incident and the driver of the Toyota have not been made public. The FHP did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for further information.
