Man hit, killed after exiting vehicle following San Gabriel Valley freeway crash

A young man died early Saturday morning after he exited his disabled vehicle on the 210 Freeway in an attempt to direct traffic following a crash, according to authorities.

The incident was first reported at about 3:57 a.m. on the westbound lanes of the 210 near Sunflower Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A 21-year-old man was driving a gray Toyota Tacoma when he collided with a big rig. No one was injured in that initial crash.

The crash did, however, leave his vehicle disabled in the middle lanes of the westbound 210. The man, a Winnetka resident, then exited the vehicle inside of the lanes, attempting to signal drivers to pass him while standing on the roadway.

While he was standing on the roadway, a man driving a gray Volkswagen Jetta hit him.

The 21-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is yet to be released publicly.

The driver of the Volkswagen also hit the disabled Toyota. He sustained major injuries and was treated at a local hospital.

It’s not yet clear if drugs or alcohol were a factor in either collision.

All lanes were reopened by 8:10 a.m.

No additional details were immediately made available.
