SUV stalls on I-49; pedestrian fatally hit by car

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - The driver of a silver Chevrolet Traverse was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and died.

On April 25, at 8:46 p.m., the Shreveport Police Department (SPD) responded to a traffic accident on I-49 North at Kings Highway. Upon arrival, officers discovered the Shreveport Fire Department already on the scene, providing medical assistance.

The driver of a silver Chevrolet Traverse was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and died of his injuries at 9:50 p.m.

SPD began an investigation into the incident and found that the Transverse stalled in the middle lane of I-49 north. The driver left his vehicle to inspect the issue. A northbound Dodge truck approached the Transverse, seeing it last minute, attempting to swerve left and hit its brakes. The Dodge struck the driver and both the disabled vehicle, resulting in major damage and fatal injuries to the man.

The Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office later identified him as 26-year-old Demuntae Bell.

The driver of the Dodge voluntarily submitted to testing. No citations have been issued at this time.

The investigation is ongoing.

“This marks the second fatal crash in Shreveport within 48 hours. The Shreveport Police Department urges all motorists to move disabled vehicles safely to the right shoulder of the roadway whenever possible, and to always use hazard lights to alert other drivers. Anyone with additional information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Shreveport Police Department’s Crash Unit,” says SPD.
