Tractor trailer flips, catches fire after collision on I-85 northbound near Oxford

GRANVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) – A tractor trailer crashed and flipped onto its side Friday morning along I-85 northbound, causing lanes to close.

It happened around 2:20 a.m. near the Granville-Vance County line just north of US Highway 158 in Oxford.

According to North Carolina State Highway Patrol, a car was traveling northbound and crashed into a guardrail. It then became disabled in the middle of the road. An 18-wheeler crashed into the car shortly after and flipped over before catching fire.

There were no fatalities. The driver of the car was seriously injured, and the driver of the tractor trailer is expected to be OK. Both were taken to a hospital.

According to NCSHP, alcohol is believed to be a factor for the driver who hit the guardrail.

Troopers anticipate the cleanup to take a few hours. All lanes – including southbound and northbound – have reopened.
