One person was killed and four people were injured Saturday in a five-vehicle collision on Interstate 805, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
The crash was reported just before 9 a.m. Saturday on the southbound freeway near Logan Avenue.
The four injured victims were taken to a hospital, a fire official said.
According to Caltrans, all lanes on the southbound side of I-805 north of 43rd Street were blocked due to the collision.
A woman in a Toyota Prius died at the scene, according to OnScene.TV, after a black sedan slammed into the car as it sat disabled on the freeway shoulder.
The motorist in the sedan had been speeding, a witness said, and swerved to avoid other cars when it struck the Prius. After the impact, the sedan swept across the rest of the lanes toward the center divider, hitting a Honda and a Toyota Corolla.
The Corolla ended up tilted between the divider and the Honda. A fifth car, a Nissan Rogue, was hit by debris.
An unconscious woman had to be extricated from the backseat of the black sedan. All three occupants of the sedan were sent to the hospital, along with a woman from one of the other vehicles.
Three lanes on southbound I-805 north of 43rd were reopened to traffic as of 1 p.m., while the two right lanes remained blocked due to the collision, Caltrans said. By 2:20 p.m., all lanes were open.
