Motorist killed on Rt. 27 after getting out of car to pick up fallen plant

One person was killed and another seriously injured Wednesday night in Edison when they stopped their car on Route 27 to retrieve a fallen potted plant and were struck by an oncoming vehicle, authorities said.

The Edison residents had stopped in the northbound left lane of Route 27 around 10:15 p.m. after a potted plant fell from their car and landed in the southbound lane, according to police.

As they crossed the roadway to retrieve it, both were hit by a vehicle traveling southbound.

The driver, a Highland Park resident, told police he was approaching the crest of a hill and could not see them.

Although the driver swerved, he struck both people, police said.

Tuan Phan died at the scene. The other person was hospitalized with serious injuries.

No charges have been filed and the incident remains under investigation by the Edison Police Serious Crash Investigation Team.
