RI trooper injured in Cranston highway crash

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — An investigation is underway into a crash that injured a Rhode Island State Police trooper on I-95 South in Cranston Tuesday afternoon.

The crash happened just after 3 p.m. as the trooper, who’s assigned to the Commercial Enforcement Unit, was inspecting a tractor-trailer in the breakdown lane near the Jefferson Boulevard exit, according to police.

Police said the trooper’s unmarked pickup truck had its emergency lights activated when a minivan veered into the breakdown lane and slammed into the back of it.

The impact propelled the pickup truck forward into the parked tractor-trailer, trapping the trooper inside.

The trooper was brought to Rhode Island Hospital to be treated for minor injuries, while the driver of the minivan was transported to Kent Hospital to be evaluated for complaints of pain, according to police.

Police said the driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

The exact cause of the crash remains unknown at this time. It’s unclear if whether charges will be filed.
