MISSOURI VALLEY, Iowa (KTIV) - Interstate 29, between U.S. 30 and Exit 82 near Missouri Valley, has reopened following an accident Saturday afternoon.
According to a report from the Iowa State Patrol, it happened near mile Marker 88, near the Missouri Valley exit.
It happened around 4:15 p.m. and wasn’t cleared until hours later.
The Iowa State Patrol reports that a previous accident occurred, resulting in a vehicle being stuck in a ditch.
The multi-car accident occurred when vehicles were starting to slow down for the initial accident and moving into the other lane away from the car in the ditch.
One of the vehicles passing the accident slowed to a “near stop,” causing a ripple effect pushing several other vehicles into each other, including a semi.
ISP says one of the vehicles went airborne during the pileup, causing it to come to a rest upside down in the median.
Six injuries were reported in the crash:
22-year-old Jens Walter Marttinen of Dassel, Minnesota (transported by helicopter to UNMC Omaha)
64-year-old Laurie Ann Stee of Gary, South Dakota (transported by ambulance to Missouri Valley Health)
