BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A crash Saturday morning in Brevard County killed a man, left a woman with serious injuries and forced the hourslong closure of all southbound lanes of Interstate 95, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 8:46 a.m. at mile marker 230, near Mims, troopers said. According to an FHP crash report, the crash involved a pickup truck, a tractor-trailer, and a sedan.
The pickup truck was traveling south on I-95 in the outside lane while the sedan traveled south in the center lane, troopers said, adding the tractor-trailer was parked on the outside shoulder.
For unknown reasons, the pickup truck ran off the roadway to the right and rear-ended the parked tractor-trailer, causing the pickup truck to enter the direct path of the sedan, which it then also struck, the report states.
The pickup truck went on to strike the median guardrail, according to FHP. Its driver, a 74-year-old Fort Pierce man, was pronounced dead after being taken to Parrish Medical Center, the report states.
The 74-year-old New Smyrna Beach woman who was driving the sedan suffered serious injuries in the crash and was hospitalized, troopers said.
Neither the driver of the tractor-trailer nor his passenger were injured in the crash, the report states. They both remained at the scene, according to FHP.
All involved were wearing seat belts, troopers said.
Traffic cameras captured growing backups in the area. Only the rightmost lane remained blocked as of around 1:40 p.m.
