A Dumfries woman was struck and killed on Interstate 95 early Tuesday morning after her car apparently ran out of gas.
State police said a 2012 Toyota Corolla was heading northbound on I-95 near the 152 mile marker near the Dumfries exit when the driver was “unable to avoid a pedestrian in the travel lane.”
The pedestrian, Karen S. Rosa Hernandez of Dumfries, died at the scene. A gas can was located nearby, state police spokesman Matthew Demlein said in a news release.
A disabled vehicle registered to Rosa Hernandez was located just south of the crash scene in the Express Lanes.
The incident stalled morning traffic for several hours, with all northbound lanes fully reopened by 8 a.m.
The crash remains under investigation.
