ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. — A crash involving two tractor trailers closed westbound Interstate 64 in Washington Park Monday evening.
Officials said the crash happened near Illinois 111 at mile marker 6. According to a preliminary crash report from Illinois State Police, a tractor-trailer car hauler struck the bridge and was stopped in the lane when it was struck by a second tractor trailer, which was hauling double trailers.
Washington Park Assistant Fire Chief Ronnie Harris said two men were in one tractor trailer and a woman was in the other. The woman and one of the men were rushed to the hospital in critical condition; the other man had a lacerated artery and troopers applied a tourniquet, which Harris said “probably saved his life.”
Illinois State Police advised drivers to seek an alternative route.
After several estimated reopening times were pushed back, the highway remained closed as of 10 p.m.
