Video: Fiery crash claims the life of 20-year-old driver on I-66 in Fairfax Co.

FAIRFAX, Va. — A driver is dead after a crash caused their pickup to burst into flames on Interstate 66 in Fairfax County Saturday evening. Virginia State Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash and charges are pending.

Robin Lawson, a spokesperson for VSP, said troopers first responded to a crash with injuries around 6 p.m. on I-66 West at Fairfax County Parkway. When troopers got on scene, they found a 1996 Nissan pickup engulfed in flames. in the left shoulder of the express lanes. The driver of the pickup was trapped inside and declared deceased at the crash scene, Lawson said. The driver has since been identified 20-year-old Will R. Hernandez-Villalta of Manassas.

Crash investigators believe the driver of the pickup was broken down in the left lane of the highway when the driver of 2016 Honda Pilot struck the pickup from behind, launching it into the left shoulder of the express lanes, where it burst into flames.

The driver of the Honda, 38-year-old Danielle McKinnon, and a juvenile passenger were hospitalized with injuries not thought to be life-threatening. The crash remains under investigation. No additional details have been made public.
