Man dies after being struck by car on Route 15 in Westport

WESTPORT, Conn. (WFSB) - A New Haven man has died after being hit by a vehicle in Westport on early Monday morning.

Troopers responded to the area near Exit 42 around 4:15 a.m. for a reported collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian, state police said.

Following an investigation, it was revealed that a 50-year-old New Haven man who was traveling in a Chrysler Pacifica, struck a guardrail in the left side of the highway.

The collision caused the vehicle to become disabled, so the individual stepped out of the car and stood in the left lane, officials said.

A driver who was traveling in the left lane then saw the individual getting out his vehicle and tried to quickly move to the right.

But police said the New Haven man jumped in the same direction and was struck.

He was was then pronounced dead.

The state police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad (CARS) was called to the scene to assist with the investigation.

All southbound lanes were closed while authorities investigate the crash.

No further details were released.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
