An 84-year-old man was killed late Tuesday in an apparent hit-and-run crash on Interstate 5 south of Sperry Avenue in the Patterson area, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP officials said officers responded about 11:10 p.m. to a report of a disabled motorist attempting to wave down vehicles along northbound I-5. When they arrived, they found an unoccupied Hyundai sedan parked on the right shoulder and the driver lying in the center median with injuries consistent with being struck by a passing vehicle.
The man, identified only as a resident of Lamont, in Kern County, died at the scene.
Investigators believe he had parked his car on the shoulder, got out and tried to get the attention of motorists before entering the northbound traffic lanes. He was struck by an unknown vehicle whose driver continued north without stopping, CHP said.
The agency is investigating the crash as a possible hit-and-run.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Aaron Norseen at the Modesto CHP office, 209-545-7440.
