One dead after two-vehicle crash on I-57 in Shelby Co.

NEOGA, Ill. (WCIA) — A semi-trailer driver died over the weekend after a two-vehicle crash in Shelby County.

Illinois State Police responded to Interstate 57 southbound at milepost 172, near Neoga around 3:35 p.m. on Saturday.

When State Police arrived, they learned that a two-axle box truck was traveling south on I-57 and a truck-tractor semi-trailer combination vehicle was stopped on the right shoulder.

The driver of the semi-trailer, a 31-year-old male from Guanajuato, Mexico, was outside his vehicle, attempting to add fuel. The box truck driver, a 38-year-old male from Milwaukee, WI, left the road and hit the driver side of the semi-trailer, along with the semi’s driver.

The semi driver was pronounced dead on the scene. The Shelby County Coroner is still working to notify the driver’s next-of-kin, and is not releasing his identity at this time.

The box truck driver was uninjured and was cited for improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

I-57 southbound was closed and traffic was rerouted at exit 177 for an investigation. The road reopened just before 10 p.m. Neoga Fire Protection District and Neoga Ambulance also responded to the scene.
