HARPSWELL, Maine — A car crash in Harpswell left a 71-year-old pedestrian dead Wednesday afternoon.
A 911 caller reported a car collision on Harpswell Islands Road near the Tower Hill Road intersection around 2:49 p.m. to the Cumberland Sheriff’s Office, according to its news release.
An initial investigation found a 41-year-old man was traveling north in a Chevrolet Silverado when it crossed the centerline and struck an empty BMW X3 SUV, deputies said. The man was taken to Maine Medical Center with injuries not considered life-threatening.
The SUV was parked on the southbound shoulder of the road, according to deputies. The driver, 71-year-old Jean Appleby Johnson, was standing outside her car when she and her vehicle were hit.
Johnson was apparently pronounced dead at the scene.
The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the crash and will release details when available.
