Indiana Toll Road shut down after 30-vehicle pile-up

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) — Following a series of crashes involving 30 vehicles, the Indiana Toll Road has been shut down in Elkhart, Indiana.

Just before 4 p.m. on Wednesday, the Indiana State Police responded to a three-vehicle crash. Upon arrival, it was evident that the initial crash had led to multiple crashes involving a total of 30 different vehicles.

Semis, as well as passenger vehicles, blocked the eastbound lanes and the center median near the 94-mile marker, just two miles east of Elkhart, Indiana. At least one vehicle had crossed the westbound lanes and landed in the ditch on the north side of the interstate.

One of the semi drivers was trapped for several hours before being freed and transported to a hospital. Although several more people were injured, none were in life-threatening condition.

When the pile-up occurred, it was snowing heavily, and there was limited visibility.

While the debris is cleared from the roadway, eastbound drivers will be redirected at Exit 83 for Mishawaka, while westbound drivers will take Exit 96 towards CR 17.
