Man, 95, Dies After Being Hit by Car While Inspecting Vehicle That Broke Down in the Middle of the Road

A 95-year-old man died and three others were injured after a “serious” crash in Illinois.

The crash occurred around 3:15 p.m. local time on Tuesday, Jan. 13, at the intersection of Lake Cook Road and Quentin Road in Deer Park, according to a news release from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO).

Authorities were first alerted to a disabled vehicle at the intersection and were told a short time later that “a serious traffic crash” had occurred at the same location.

A preliminary investigation showed a 2006 Honda Accord “broke down and became disabled” in the center westbound lane of Lake Cook Road, the LCSO said.

The driver of the Accord, identified by authorities as the 95-year-old man, then “exited his vehicle and began looking underneath the vehicle, under the engine area,” they added, citing witness statements.

That’s when a 2024 Honda HR-V, which police said was driven by a 30-year-old man from Cary, “struck the Honda Accord from behind,” leaving the 95-year-old man with “major injuries.”

The elderly man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Additionally, three people “were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries” following the crash, the sheriff’s office said.

The individuals include the driver of the HR-V and a 30-year-old woman from Arlington Heights who was a passenger in the SUV, as well as a 77-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Accord. None of the individuals involved have been identified by name.

A school bus was also sideswiped during the crash, according to the LCSO. The bus driver was the only person onboard at the time and was not injured.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
