HONOLULU (KHON2) — A 26-year-old man is dead after a multi-vehicle collision on the westbound H-1 Freeway on the night of Jan. 4, the Honolulu Police Department said.
The deadly crash occurred in the Kapolei area, just before the Makakilo off-ramp.
According to investigators, a 32-year-old man was driving on the freeway when he lost control of his vehicle attempting to avoid a crash.
After losing control, he drove into the right shoulder land and up the dirt embankment before sideswiping two empty vehicles in the shoulder, officials said.
The driver continued forward in the shoulder land, where he rear-ended a parked and empty vehicle, police said.
That parked vehicle then hit the victim and another man, 24, who were changing the tire on a vehicle, HPD said.
As a result of the collision, the rear-ended vehicle moved forward and rolled over several times before hitting another empty car in the shoulder, officials said.
One of the men changing the tire was transported to the hospital in critical condition by Honolulu Emergency Medical Services.
The other was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver remained at the scene and was not injured in the chaos.
