Car strikes deer on I-196, hit by trailing vehicle

OTTAWA COUNTY, MI – No one was injured early Thursday, Oct. 29, when a disabled car on I-196 was struck by another vehicle after hitting a deer.

The driver of a Ford Fusion that struck the deer was out of her vehicle when it was struck by a Jeep Cherokee.

The crashes happened around 12:30 a.m. on eastbound I-196 in Ottawa County’s Georgetown Township.

Sheriff’s deputies said the Fusion, disabled after striking the deer, was partially in the road when it was hit.

The driver of the Fusion, a 26-year-old Zeeland woman, and the driver of the Jeep, a 20-year-old Wyoming man, were wearing seat belts and uninjured.

The vehicles sustained extensive damage, deputies said.

The highway was closed for a time while the vehicles were removed from the roadway and debris was cleaned up.
